Vintage Goodness

My plants have grown a bit these past few weeks, but no yummy, red tomatoes have appeared yet. I’m starting to think they’re not getting enough sun. They’re also getting a bit big for the greenhouse so I’m planning on replanting them soon and lining them up outside with something protective covering it to ward off squirrels and other neighborhood creatures.

I am almost finished with my rainbow granny square blanket — just one more row to go! I do, however, have bunches of ends to weave in, but I won’t think about that now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once I’m finished I’m going to make a Bower Bird. I’ve been looking forward to this project for a while and can’t wait to get started.

The blanket would have been finished sooner — a lot sooner — but I have been busy these past couple of months with working on my shop, writing, and drawing. I got these lovely watercolor brush pens for my birthday and I’m having lots of fun practicing with them.

I’m also familiarizing myself with coloring with colored pencils — I want to improve my skill by using cheaper Crayola pencils before taking a dive to more high-quality/expensive ones. However, I am surprised by how well Crayola colored pencils can blend!

Here are some new listings for vintage paper ephemera I have listed inย my shop. There are lots of cute/kitsch postcards that have been recently listed, and there are many more to come. ~~

Summer

I’ve been procrastinating with updated this blog, and I blame these video games: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Lights, and Ni no Kuni. I’ve already started on fan art for both of them. I received new watercolor brush pens for my birthday and I can’t wait to use them for coloring!

Speaking of my birthday, I had a great one!

I spent the weekend with my family and received a few goodies like the yarn pictured above. I just love all of the colors together! I still haven’t decided what I want to make with them. ๐Ÿ™‚

I also received bunches of tomato sprouts. I only had these size containers to put them in, so hopefully they will stay healthy. They’ve already grown a bit since I took this picture a week and a half ago.

I’ve been busy adding new items to my store, including some vintage sewing notions, washi tape, and cute stickers. More items are added almost daily! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy summer solstice, everyone!

Mandalas

Thanks to all who have been purchasing from my shop. Every sale brings a smile to my face. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve listed all of my washi tape in my shop, until the next batch comes in. The cute strawberry tape that I mentioned in a previous post has already been sold out, but there are plenty of other cute styles still available.

Currently I’m focusing on uploading more vintage fabric. I absolutely love this cat fabric. I’m guessing it might be from the early 80s.

I took a small break from my granny square blanket to pick out all of my yarn scraps and finally make some mandalas.

They are super easy to make. I used Lucy’s pattern for these ones, and I plan on trying out the other patterns she listed as well.

Just wanted to end this post with something I’ve been excited about. I pre-ordered this phone case from Jlist.com back in late December/early January. It wasn’t released until April, and just a few days ago I finally received it after it had traveled all the way from Japan. I just love the design and the color combos. It matches my pink iPhone 5c quite well, too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Warmth

I can’t believe we’re already two weeks into May… and almost halfway through the year!

There’s been a heat wave all of this week which makes it difficult to want to do a thing. I live in an area where air conditioning is not the norm in homes, soย  all the fans are on. I miss cold weather!

It’s been too hot to work on my blanket during the day so I wait until evening when the sun has set and I can open the living room window to let a breeze in while we watch a show or two. I finally bought some more colors to replenish the ones that are starting to turn into little yarn blobs. I’m hoping it will be enough…

I haven’t taken any pictures of my art yet to make into prints (we need to acquire better lighting and perhaps borrow a nicer camera from a friend), but I’ve still been working on some drawings. A while ago I bought a whole bunch of crayons after watching some Youtube videos of some very talented artists using them. I don’t think I’ve touched a crayon since I was a kid, but watching Youtubers using them for their art seemed like a lot of fun (and colorful!).

This is the picture I’m most proud of, Sailor V. I’m still learning how to blend colors without getting the picture too waxy from the crayons, and every picture I do I seem to improve.

I love the colorful aftermath of using them. I had to snap a picture of it before I cleaned up. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also been doing more digital art, which doesn’t come easily to me. I am not the most technologically advanced person, and sitting down and figuring out what all of the buttons do is a true test of my patience… but now that I understand the basics of what I’m doing I am loving the result. I’ll post the drawings at a later date once I’ve done the finishing touches on them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is anyone doing Attic24’s Mandala Challenge? I want to make a few to send over to the UK for Yarndale. I am definitely inspired to decorate my own walls with colorful mandalas. x

Art

I’ve been working steadily on my granny square blanket while watching Arrow and Game of Thrones. I already need to restock on some colors and will have to make a purchase soon through Deramores. I love how fast their shipping is — it only takes about a week for my order to get here from the UK, which is quicker than certain other websites I order from that are based in the US.

I’ve been working a lot on my art lately with the idea of selling prints and more stickers in my shop. Sailor Moon has been inspiring my drawings lately, and I have been practicing my coloring while eagerly awaiting the new series.

I used Akashiya Sai watercolor brush pens (I need to get the entire set — I love using them) and Copic Markers to color the pictures, and Micron pens to ink them.

Hope you all have a lovely Monday. x

Granny Stripe Blanket Tah-Dah!

I’m finally making a little tah-dah post about my granny stripe blanket I finished late last month. I’m very proud of this blanket as it is the first major crochet project I have finished.

I love how bright the colors are! Bringing my blanket outside made me realize that I need to get started on some spring gardening. I would just love to fill my garden with all of these colors since everything is a bit drab at the moment…

I’m sure the neighbors were wondering why the heck I was outside taking so many pictures of a blanket. ๐Ÿ˜›

I could seriously post an endless amount of pictures of this blanket — I am so in love with it. I’ll spare you though. Oh wait, one more… ๐Ÿ˜‰

I needed to get a shot of its colorful entirety.

Once again, I used Stylecraft Special DK for my blanket. I love, love, love using this yarn and now find it hard to go back to any other acrylic yarn. โค

Shop Updates

My crocheting took a bit of a standstill this past week as I’ve been working hard on my shop. I have a new URL now (http://paperelf.co) that redirects to my etsy shop, which I think is pretty nifty.

I restocked a lot of washi tape — mostly new and super cute designs that I’m very excited about.

These are some of my favorites. It’s taking me a bit of effort not to use them for myself!

These stickers are also absolutely adorable and I am happy to have them now available in my shop. I love the vintage feel they have to them, and the illustrations are adorable.

I am also starting to include my own art in my shop like these fun Pokemon-inspired stickers. I hope to make more stickers of my art available soon!

I am finished working for the day so perhaps I’ll pick up my crochet hook and do a few more rounds. I love how bright this blanket is turning out to be. x

Rainbows

My granny stripe blanket is finished!ย  Once the weather is better (not that I’m complaining about the rain… I love it), I will take some pictures in the natural light. I just love the way it looks on my couch… I could stare at it for hours! 8D

I’ve already started on another blanket. This time I’ve decided to do a giant granny square with a rainbow color scheme. I love how quickly this pattern works up.

I’m using some of the brightest Stylecraft DK colors I have. It’s definitely going to make a statement, ha ha! I am using lipstick, matador, sunshine, citron, bright green, green, cloud blue, aster, grape, and fiesta. Some of the colors did not come out right on my camera (the bright green, for example, looks like spring green!).

This past week I’ve been busy listing bunches of more fabric in my shop, a lot of it vintage, like this 70s fabric in the picture above. I have much more to list, including some cute stationery items in the next week or so, and I’m very excited. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve also created a Facebook page. I’ll be posting some coupon codes for my shop pretty soon! x

Updates

More rain is heading our way this week and I am nice and cozy with my rainbow granny stripe blanket and a cup of warm green tea as I type out this blog post.

I am very much a collector of many different types of fabric. It’s hard to resist the urge to buy cute prints and bright colors and dream about all of the different types of projects I could make with it.

The pictures above are some of my favorites that I just listed on Etsy. I absolutely love this fabric… it reminds me of walking by all of the pretty yukata shops in the spring/summer when I lived in Tokyo.

I still have bunches of paper ephemera to list, and in the next few weeks I’ll have more stationery, including stickers and washi tape.

Isn’t this just the cutest card? It’s from the 1940s-50s, I believe. I want to frame it and hang it up in my office. x

My Crochet Nook

I love having this special spot on the couch I can retreat to after a long day. I love the colors that surround me, and looking at my cheerful, rainbow granny stripe blanket on my lap while I finish the border. I love that spring is finally here, and that the days are longer, warmer, and brighter. I love to sit here while I crochet and think about all of the joyful things that will be happening this year.

Happy spring, everyone. x
